We checked out the Silk Fab exhibition-cum-sale at the Constitution Club Of India last evening and were enamoured by swathes of beautiful silk sarees and dress materials from 15 Indian states. So there, this is the happy part.
Why rich, you ask? Well, we found an utterly gorgeous kantha-work kurta cloth for INR 2,000, and everything between plain chiffons, tie and die, pochampally, patola, bandhej, chanderi, tanchoi, madhubani print sarees, gadhwalis and more at a fraction of the cost we’re used to expecting at stores we frequent.
Everyone who takes pride in wearing traditional weaves; we’re looking at the arty-farty, the suave wedding attender and the saree crusader waging a war against factory-made.
The National Handloom Development Corporation Ltd. has done a fabulous job of collecting some gifted craftsmen, including national awardees, samitis and State-funded agencies who are known for their products and are not over-the-top expensive. To give you an idea, there are 110 different handloom brands to pick from , some of them even with discounts on.
The benefits of your purchases then go directly to the people who create these beautiful sarees; there are no middlemen hiking the prices and making you reconsider buying handlooms.
The exhibition is on till Oct 27 and after you’ve got your textile-loving side satiated, you can head to Darya Ganj to buy cheap books or grab a meal at Andhra Bhavan.
When: Till Oct 27
Timings: 11am – 8pm
Where: Constitution Club Of India
