Nestled in the quiet, quaint hamlet of Burans Khanda in Dhanaulti—a short 23-odd kilometres away from Uttarakhand’s capital, Dehradun, Barefoot Bungalow is a luxe homestay that overlooks the breathtaking Himalayas.

Founded by Mr Harpal more than a year ago, Barefoot Bungalow is one of the cosiest home stays I have set foot in. Having spent three days and two nights there, it is safe to say that Barefoot Bungalow exceeded all my expectations. You're immediately greeted by warm, smiling faces. Once you take a moment to take in your surroundings, we bet you'll be overwhelmed, in the best way, by the stunning snow-capped Himalayans, because I sure was.

The entire property is spread over over 14,000 square feet, with three intimate bedrooms, which come with attached bathrooms—one bedroom comes with a stunning view of the mountains, one is an indoor cosy one and one with a view of the property's garden. In addition to this, there's a glasshouse kitchen by the patio where you can watch every meal being prepared in front of you, along with a huge private garden that wraps around the main 'house.'

We had three attendants, a personal butler and chef Anuj to cater to all our needs, including late-night maggi cravings! What I loved most about the food is that not once did it taste like 'restaurant' food. Every meal was wholesome, filling and straight out of a ghar ki rasoi. We were also treated to authentic Gharwali food, which was simply chef's kiss!

On the first night, the ambience was amped up with live singing and a bonfire, which was much needed and appreciated with temperatures touching  minus 1! Sitting by the bonfire munching and drinking, Mr Harpal graced us with his presence as we sat chatting late into the night listening to him speak about his vision of making Barefoot feel like a home away from home for its guests—which is something we felt immediately.

The second day, we all went on a trek across two mountains and through the forest, accompanied by one of the attendants. It was an experience, with a view to behold at the end. The same evening we visited the tiny market, which is a short 15-minute drive, there's nothing much there expect a couple local shops where we got our hands on some padhadi woollens. Once back, we were greeted by a scrumptious barbeque spread, along with live music.

The entire home's decor is wooden and cosy, with a fireplace in the living room, which was great to sit around and chat around. The rooms are just as cozy with heated flooring and beds perfect for the coldest of subjects. However, for me, nothing will beat the sheer joy and peace of waking up to a view of the mountains sitting right there on your bed with a hot cuppa!

If you're a lover of the mountains, all things luxury, or simply want some peace and quiet from your busy city lives, then don't think twice and head to Barefoot Bungalow—truly a home stay in all it's glory.
