A Danced Meditation Therapeutic Movement with Nathaniel Parchment What: 90 minutes of somatic work, 90 minutes of release-based dance technique over 5 days Who: Anyone who is interested in somatic work and/or dance. Come for one session or for both - beginners welcome! When: Jan 3-7 (Tue-Sat) 8.30am - 10am (somatic work) 10.30 - 12pm (dance technique) About the Workshop Inspired by contemporary dance, yoga and somatic practices such as experiential anatomy, Tai Chi, and Qi Gong, Therapeutic Movement gives the mind a rest, and the body a treat. It allows the ‘body-mind’ to rebalance, and recharge, thus reawakening the sensuous joy of being alive! Therapeutic Dance incorporates meditation, yoga, experiential anatomy, and imagery to guide participants into rediscovering the too-often forgotten, deep connection to our bodies, with which we were born. In the first part of the workshop, we will explore the different systems and layers of the body (organs, tissues, liquid, respiratory, lymphatic, skeletal etc.), listening to how connecting with these systems can bring about new movement experiences. We will also explore the fundamental human developmental patterns we experienced in-utero and as babies; learning to crawl, walk, stand and run, growing from these into more complex movement ideas. In the second part of the workshop, we will work individually and in groups and attempt to find the space between inner connectivity and outer expression, using free-form improvisation as well as set movement patterns. We will draw from contemporary dance, yoga asana and Tai Chi, using these techniques to ground, float and fall artfully, fly gracefully and travel in new ways. Using music and each other, at our own unique pace, we will find our own dances that emerge from a true connection to our internal landscape, reaching a place of ease, flow and fun, and moving with the innate wisdom of our bodies. PLEASE NOTE: Sessions will be split between somatic, meditative practice and more rigorous, release-based dance practice. This will give the opportunity for beginners or " non-dancers" to join at the beginning of the morning and opt out of the second session. Likewise, experienced dancers and movement practitioners may join the second session without attending somatic, meditative session beforehand.
