The emergence of Sahej Bakshi aka Dualist Inquiry dovetailed with the beginnings of indie or alternative electronica in the country at the start of this decade. The Delhi-based producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist has consistently delivered genre-defying records that have left an indelible mark on the electronica landscape. His distinct guitar-driven sound, honed at the prestigious Thornton School of Music, LA, is one of the few singular sounds in the country today, one that stands out from the ever-growing pervasiveness of commercial electronic music. Releases like his critically acclaimed debut Doppelganger LP (2013) and the Natural Disasters EP (2014) have cemented his place as one of India’s truly original songwriters. And now, he’s back with his most ambitious release yet.
Set to release on September 12, Dreamcatcher is a statement of intent against the monotony of today’s commercialised, hit-prioritising electronic music landscape. It is the statement of an artist willing to pay attention to the craft of writing, performing and producing music that isn’t piggybacking on a trend, or aimed solely at charts. Dreamcatcher is Dualist Inquiry laid bare. Stripped of the need to bow to the masses, Sahej went searching inside instead of out, capturing photographs of his subconscious. He describes the process as vividly elemental, allowing him to explore further depths of his sound. Locked in his studio in Delhi, Sahej got to work writing, recording and producing every sound you will hear on this album. The result is a record as atypical as his previous releases, but yet undoubtedly Dualist.
