When I started writing this post, I realised I hardly took any pictures except the one I immediately sent to my friends the minute I landed at this place.
Planning to go to a hill station at a notice of one night does not really leave too much room for doing the background research especially when you’re the kinds who doesn’t want to miss any inch of the place. Considering I was going there for just one day, I had to pick the places that most resonated with my idea of an absolute zen mode to recover from what was a horrible week at work.
“We went to Sweet Rascal and got denied service”.
“You HAVE to book your reservation a day in advance or else you’ll just have to make another trip to Sweet Rascal”.
“It’s a pure non-vegetarian place without menu cards, you just have to tell him your choice of meat”.
“The food was delicious along with the fact that Vishu is extremely obnoxious about his life and that is visible on every inch of the cafe”.
I HAD to go here if not for the Yarcaud Lake, Lady’s Seat and the plantations. I did tick mark those bytheway, because, well.
I frantically started looking for this cafe, any number, anything at all as I was leaving on Friday evening and come back on Saturday afternoon. I HAD to be there. It was a zen mode escape with a mission. I found a landline number which didn’t exist all the 13 times I called it. Tired and exhausted, after extensive googling, leaving anonymous comments on every place I saw mention of the cafe, I left it to fate. Jo hoga, dekha jayega.
I was dying of anticipation. I couldn’t wait to wake up and get to the cafe and put my aching heart at rest. So, I reach Sweet Rascal, it greeted me with ‘They have lived with me half a life and shall die with me half a death’ and I knew I’ll find something here, I’ll never forget.
I go to their door and ask them if they’d be able to accommodate me, this kind gentleman greets me and asks me if I had a reservation, to which I explained how I tried innumerous times and almost! begged him to accommodate me.
‘Chicken, pork, fish, prawns, squid..we have everything. What do you want?’
We ordered some food and beverages and it was heavenly! It took him one hour to prepare due to less people visiting but such wholesome quantities!
The entire place was built in an old British area, three birds and a kennel, along with plants that may be more than 100 in number and a well maintained collection of bonsais. I fell in love, how could I not.
We met Vishnu, the owner who started he place 3 years back and he told us about his love for plants, his inheritance of a caring for a 1000 bonsais, his love for quirky quotes on women and relationships, his plans of expanding the cafe and ‘If you need anything, ANYTHING at all any time of the day, give me a call. It’s a foreign land for you and you never know when you may need a helping hand around the locals. Do not hesitate.’ He wrote his name and number on the sheet he took our order, in a calligraphy style using an antique ink pen, because, that’s Vishnu.
It was a one hour long kaleidoscope of moments that I would always look back to with admiration and peace and go to Yarcaud for only this very place if not the 40 hairpins.
PS- please however try to reserve beforehand.
