You come to Jayanagar for the cult eateries which’ve built their reputation on single dishes.

Cool Joint

Nondescript and unabashedly no-frills, Cool Joint is always bursting at the seams with patrons – typically hungry students on dates – who will hold out for the sandwiches and ice creams. Try the grilled cheese-tomato sandwich and wash it down with a glass of watermelon juice. Marvel at the things you can do here with just INR 100.

Ganesh Darshan

Another joint in the area with a forgettable name and unforgettable food. They’re known for their masala dosa, but their akki rottis and ragi rottis are also excellent picks.

Rotti Mane

With a name like that, you probably know what you’re in for. If you’re seeking the finest fare from North Karnataka – including ragi rottis and jowar rottis – here is where you need to be.

More of the south Indian fare that Jayanagar renders so excellently. But it’s not run-of-the-mill by any means: the brief menu at Taaza Thindi contains all sorts of treasures, including an unforgettable khara bhath.

The big daddy of old-school shopping. The Jayanagar 4th Block Complex {which rose, phoenix-like, from a fire a few years ago} is a treat to the window-shopper and the errand-shopper alike. Shashi Bagchi’s terracotta store is an ode to the functionality and aesthetics of “cooked earth”. From sample decorative pieces to utensils, you’ll find it all here.

As the name suggests, it’s all things rural here; Grameena Angadi carries pottery, other handicrafts, wooden games, handlooms and khadi textiles, and herbal and organic fare.

Metaphor Racha

The Khadi enthusiast will truly find the area a treat. Metaphor Racha are fans of the fabric’s versatility, and sell khadi jackets, stoles, and saris besides kurtas and tunics.

The Summer House

This boutique primarily retails online, but you can write them a letter or visit their studio during one of their pop-ups. They’re known for their focus on minimalism and slow-living. Expect skirts, tops, dresses and shorts.

It’s hard to walk down a road without running into a music or dance teacher of some sort, and several authors have made the area their home. Keeping that in mind, here are some of the landmarks of the area.

The manufacturers of every classical musician’s trusty accompaniment – the shruti box or electronic tanpura – have set up shop in the area. You can also explore a range of other digital musical instruments, such as an electronic veena and an electronic tabla.

Jayanagar Jaguars

This local running group is contagious in its enthusiasm for running across all forms, be it half-marathons, fun runs, or a recent run up and down Nandi Hill. They also conduct regular practice and training sessions.

Even among Jayanagar’s several parks, the Nandanavana Park stands out for its kid-friendliness: toddlers and children can play on slides, tunnels, and other activities. Even better? It’s all for the princely sum of INR 5.

Yediyur Lake

This lake has plenty of history to it: some accounts suggest it goes back as far as 1,400 years. Joggers, walkers, and residents favour the lake for a tranquil stroll.
