    Living The Farm Life At Acres Wild, Coonoor Will Make You Say Cheese

    If your idea of a holiday is escaping to the hills, living in rustic wooden cottages and learning how to make delicious cheese, Acres Wild is ideal.

    On The Farm

    Just a 20-kilometer drive away from the main town of Ooty, Acres Wild’s farm expanse really take you to another place. Quiet, unpretentious, and obviously down to earth, it is a dream if you’re looking to reconnect with nature, and even give back — by being part of the self-sustaining eco-system the places works on. Plus, very engaging conversation with the owners — former filmmaker Mansoor  and Tina, make it more worthwhile. Get Mansoor to tell you tales of filmmaking in Mumbai, it’s fantastic just listening!

    Keep It Simple

    Checking into this charming farmstay means you’re a bit cheesy. The rooms are all named after cheeses you see —  Haloumi and Cheddar House, with two rooms each and Colby Cottage. Don’t expect luxury, instead honest home-style digs with antique furniture with comfy beds and sit-outs that have views so spectacular, you’ll forget you need WiFi and HD. Once you’re done marvelling at the sights, which of course is dominated by the looming Nilgiris {especially splendid in winter with the mist dissipating as the sun rises}. In the monsoon, stay in and watch the rain play tag with the surface of the pond water.

    Say Cheese

    When all the vista has settled into your mind, skip out and really get your hands dirty by helping out on the farm. There’s plenty of chickens to feed, cows to milk, and organic veggies to be dealt with. But since cheese is the main attraction here, we highly recommend doing one of their cheese-making courses. The two-day sessions see you learn two types of cheeses {although multiple students mean all will learn the same one}. But if you’re keen, extend your stay and add a cheese a day to your repertoire. Currently, you can learn to whip up soft cheese, Gouda, Colby, Monterey Jack, Havarti, Cheddar, Gruyere, Parmesan, Feta, Haloumi and good old Mozzarella.


    Sundays are off days so don’t count on learning to make cheese on the Sabbath Day.
