Ten-Second Takeaway

For when you want to truly reconnect with nature, Bamboo Banks is the perfect, rustic hideaway. Luxury isn’t everything, is it?

Bank On It

One of the first, if not the pioneer, Bamboo Banks is a farm resort nestled at the foothills of the Nilgiris in the Mudumalai Game Reserve. Away from the drama of star-resorts and uber luxe set-ups, this one keeps it simple, charming and fuss-free. Started by Zerene and Siasp Kothavala back in 1974, the fact that people still flock here {book well in advance if you want to go} stands testament. If you’re wondering why it’s called so, then you need only look at the Avarhalla streams that weaves its way in and out of the 40-acre farm.

Homely Affair

With space only for 30 guests across seven rooms, exclusivity and attention to detail are paramount here. There are three individual cottages – Brick House, The Annexe and The Cottage, of which we’d pick the first and last. The Brick House, unplastered and made entirely of brick, lends a village-esque flavour to your holiday, and in the jungle we simply love it! The Cottage similarly is all stone and cooling, but is especially practical for large groups or families as it has twin rooms with a connecting door. The Acacia and Jacaranda cottages, with a marvellous view of the hills, also are connected, so boisterous groups, this one’s for you. All the rooms are done up like a home, each with their own colourful linen to brighten up the space, basket weave furniture to sit on and sip on a cuppa, and a charming sit out to relish the clean air.

Stay Active

A swimming pool means you can spend at least a day wallowing and decompressing from city life. But do venture out into the premises for nature walks, bird watching and animal spotting. If you’re an eagle eye, the machan will be great to just sit at with binoculars and scan for wildlife. When you’re famished {which you will be from all the walking}, a delicious home-style buffet awaits you. Mostly Indian, with a smattering of Continental food, take your plate and sit in the gardens so you make the most of your trip.

Do make time to talk to the owners as they have a wealth of information, and more importantly, intriguing tales to tell of all the visitors – human and animal. Put in a request for a bonfire to really set the mood.
