What Makes It Awesome

If you like rustic and antique furniture, then Bamboo Bazaar in Shivajinagar is heaven on earth and unmissable.

You can quickly identify the street in question thanks to the rows of old doors, windows and wood just stacked up against each other. While most of them don’t have names per se, they sell all kinds of old furniture: from antique pieces to MDF (multi-density fibreboard) and metal. If you’re lucky, you’ll get teak wood/rosewood furniture for dirt cheap. These pieces boast of good craftsmanship and if you find something, buy it then and there. You’re unlikely to find it the next time you go there and there's a lot to browse through—you will need a keen eye and patience to pick the right pieces. And if you’re a DIY enthusiast, there’s plenty to work with. Many smaller pieces (like carvings, wooden columns and stands) are available. If you know what you want and are not in a hurry to get it, exchange numbers with Siddique (Eastern Demolishers) or Sadiq—because we found the best pieces at their stores—and they’ll update you with what they source.

One small part of the street does actually have bamboo stores that you’ll spot, courtesy the ladders, poles and blinds being made right there on the street. They’ll happily custom make them for you in whatever finish you need—just give them the specifics.

Pro-Tip

If you are not an expert, make sure you take someone who has knowledge of wood quality and knows the worth of furniture/antiques. Despite the shopkeeper’s assurances, know that some of these damaged pieces can’t be restored for practical uses.
