Live Music, Food Stalls And A Sky Full Of Kites: 5 Reasons To Catch The Bengaluru Kite Festival

The information in this post might be outdated

The Bengaluru Kite Festival is set to take off this Sunday and we’re pretty excited for what’s in store. In town for the third time round, this festival is one big party with plenty of entertainment, food and of course, kite flying. From a kite show to raising funds for great causes, here’s five reasons why you shouldn’t miss the Bengaluru Kite Festival.

It's A Plastic-Free Event

Sticking to an entirely eco-friendly theme, everything from the kites to the stalls set up at the venue will be made of biodegradable and sustainable elements. Keeping it plastic-free, guests and participants will not be allowed to bring their own kites and string to the venue but will be provided with eco-friendly kites and strings on the purchase of a pass. And the best part is you get to keep these kites and take them home with you. We think that’s a pretty neat souvenir.

Never flown a kite before? No worries. There’ll be a quick kite flying demo that’ll bring you up to speed until your ready to take your kites to greater heights.

Fleas, Food And Fun

With a flea market, featuring over 40 stalls, shop for everything from jewellery to home decor. Score on Indo-Western wear in ikats and Jaipuri cottons from Amoghasiddhi Creations and pick up glitzy pieces from Sultan Jewellery, both of which will have their own stalls at the venue. And don’t forget to refuel at the many food stalls that will also be marking their attendance at the event. Paradise Biryani and Cafe Coffee Day are just a few names that will be setting up shop, along with other local food stalls.

The Mega Kite-Off

Oh yeah! There’s gonna be one mega kite show to awe us all at the event. Featuring pros at kite flying, expect to see some aerodynamic tricks and treats. And then watch them battle it out for top prize at the Mega Kite Flying Competition. You can’t say no to a good old-fashioned kite-off; it’ll be worth the crick in your neck from staring up at the sky for so long.

Live Music And Entertainment

As any big celebration goes, there’ll be live music to keep you swaying all through the day. With two bands performing at the event, and a stand-up comedy set squeezed into the schedule too, there’s no shortage of entertainment in this gig {apart from all the kite-flying that is}. Catch musical acts like Param, a Hindustani rock band from Mysore, and Terracotta. And giggle away at the at the stand-up event featuring comedian Diptarka Ghosh that’s bound to be a LOL fest.

In Support Of Great Causes

Organised by the Rotary Club Bangalore, this kite festival is a fundraiser to support some of the charitable causes the club is associated with. Proceeds raised from the event will go towards the screening of children for heart disease and their surgeries, their adult literacy programme and running their creche and diagnostic centre for the underprivileged. Some of the funds will also be allocated for the maintenance and upkeep of Iblur Park in Bellandur. So come on down for a day of jolly good fun and give back to society while you’re at it.
