Parks & Recreation
Okaay, we're not asking you to go to Lal Bagh and Cubbon Park here. We know you've already been there but there are some parks that you must check out in Bangalore and these are:
Bugle Rock Park: The park is home to one of the gets its name from an age-old practice of a sentry holding a torch and blowing a bugle to alert people of an intruder or to tell everyone that the area is safe. The rock formation is very similar to the one at Lalbagh and is spread over an area of 16 acres.
Freedom Park: The previous Central Jail used to be here and now it's been converted to a park that has a library, joggers park and even a children’s play area. Plus, popular events and meets happen here regularly.
M.N. Krishna Rao Park: MNK Park as it is locally known is a 25-acre park with virtually green cover everywhere. You can park yourself on the benches or work out in the outdoor gym area. There's also a jogging track and a basketball court.
A Day At The Museums
Yes, everyone knows about NGMA, Visvesvaraya Industrial & Technological Museum, the Government Museum, and even MAP. But we are here to tell you there are some more:
NIMHANS Brain Museum: This one-of-a-kind museum in Bangalore is home to over 400 kinds of brains -- humans and animals -- and you can learn everything there is to know about that computer that powers the organic body. Plus there's a lineup of brains that have been riddled with conditions like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Cerebral Palsy. There are guided tours that you can sign up for to check out.
Vimor Museum Of Living Textiles: At this museum that's inside a house, you'll find ancient, forgotten weaves with their fascinating little back story. The museum hosts talks and meets as well as displays a wide range of weaves from around the country.
Indian Music Experience: From a learning centre to galleries that focus on different themes and a sound garden, this museum gives a great insight into Indian music. There are interactive elements at the museum where you can try making your own music.
HAL Heritage Centre and Aerospace Museum: Touted to be India’s first aerospace museum, here you can learn about the rich aviation history of India, see how aircraft engines function including models, and even check out flight simulators. There are also displays of various aircraft.
Stadium & Arcadium
Bangalore's big on sports and games. Of course, it is home to Bengaluru FC, and Royal Challengers Bangalore and the die-hard fans in the city often end up at some of the iconic stadiums such as Kanteerava Stadium and M. Chinnaswamy Stadium come matchdays. There's also a wide range of activity arenas within the city where folks can enjoy everything from bowling to go-karting. Here are some of our favourites:
Torq3: Race around in go-kart cars and have a jolly good or you could head to the arcade section to play bowling, bumper cars, and of course arcade games. You know like the good old days?
Loco Bear: The newest entertainment hub in Bangalore is located in Koramangala and there's everything from a bowling alley to a trampoline park, laser tag and arcade, and everything in between.
Play Arena: If you are into paintball and skateboarding, then you will be happy to know that they have both and more. Go-karting, laser tag, bowling, target practice, cricket, rugby, and even a kid's play arena are there too.
Confessions Of A Shopaholic
Yes yes, we get it if you are rolling your eyes because you think we are going to suggest Commercial Street for all your shopping needs. It's one of the best street markets in Bangalore, but we know you want something more. And we have more for you to go all Rebecca Bloom.
Chickpete: Sure you'd have heard about this place a dozen times, but have you been here a dozen times? The pete area is made up of various lanes, roads, by-lanes, and smaller markets. You can find everything under the sun here from furniture to stationery, jewellery to wedding and festive wear, groceries and home essentials, and everything in between.
Safina Plaza: This is a shopaholic's paradise and expect to find everything from factory outlets, decor stores, pop-up stalls selling all sorts of home furnishings, Kashmiri carpets, ethnic wear, and junk jewellery.
Street Shopping: Be sure to check out places such as Malleswaram 8th Cross, Avenue Road, Shivaji Nagar, and KR Market area for budget finds across home, groceries, fashion, and even electronics.
