Bonfires, Kodava Cuisine & A Jeep BBQ Grill: Book Your Spot At This Revamped Heritage Home

Transforming an ancestral home into a swanky homestay, The Bungalow 1934, complete with an outdoor bonfire, plush patios, old-school kitchen and splashes of colour all over, is perfect to call home, when in Coorg.

    When In Coorg

A trip to Coorg is a right of passage for every long-time Bangalorean. So when the next long weekend arrives, we suggest rounding up the squad or the family and planning a fun road trip to the Scotland of India and we know just where your gang should stay. The Bungalow 1934 is a big house on a hill in Kakkabe that offers the best mix of traditional charm and contemporary quirks, as the heritage home has been revamped and refurbished with plenty of fun elements like a colourful wall {perfect for selfies}, an old jeep converted into a barbecue grill {oh yeah, 200 points right here!}, an outdoor bonfire and plenty of brightly coloured chairs and potted plants dotting the property.

But a lot of its old-world elegance has been preserved. The home is full of antiques and traditional furniture, like their four-poster beds, wooden tables and hunting trophies on the walls. Their old-timey kitchen and dining area is outside the home and is manned by the lovely Sarsu, who has been cooking for the family home for the last 36 years. Yep! You’re gonna be loading up on some delicious and authentic Kodava cuisine while you’re here as breakfast is on the house. And you can take home some famous Coorg homemade chocolates that are available at the property.

    The Hill Station Experience

With five rooms, that are nice and spacious, there’s plenty of room here to cosy up in. Each room is minimally furnished with a bed and a wooden rack for towels and clothes. The rooms also have attached bathrooms that are much bigger than the ones we’re used to and have hot running water all through the day {which is important as Coorg can get quite chilly sometimes}. And come night time, head outdoors to enjoy a barbecue or just share stories around the bonfire, which will keep you nice and toasty in the low temperatures of the hill station. Perfect for a group vacay, we think, and that’s why they let you rent the whole home if you’re coming in with a big gang.

But don’t just sit in your plush bedroom. Get the complete Coorg experience by waking up early to sip on some fresh tea or coffee, made from the leaves and beans sourced from the plantations, taking in all of the scenic beauty that surrounds you. Getting to the hotel and back down to the roads involves a riding up and down a hill in a jeep, that makes for an adventure by itself. So take a longer route and we’ll count it as a trek.

Otherwise, the tariff per room {for two} is at about INR 6,250. So what are you waiting for? Coorg, here we come!
