That’s right! There’s a burger festival in town. Skip on your usual fast food order and hit up Toast & Tonic anytime from Thursday, November 2 to Sunday, November 12 to tuck into gourmet burgers. The brains behind the menu Sous Chef Chirag Makwana, has drawn inspiration from all things local and has played with different meats, textures and flavours and the results don’t disappoint.
Our top favourites include the Soft Shell Crab Burger. What’s not to love about a crispy, juicy and oh-so tender, fried soft shell crab paired with avocado and sofrito {a garlicky sauce} and served between buns. Another winner was the North-Easter Star, with a Khasi-style black sesame pork and bamboo shoot that comes in a sesame bun. This one was a nice mix of North-Eastern flavours that we’ve never thought we could ever get from a burger and turned out to be a pleasant surprise. This burger has been inspired by a trip to Meghalaya, and when you sink your teeth into it you will feel the crunch of perilla seeds {a kind of wild sesame} native to the state.

Other options include The Standard, a good old classic beef burger, the Lamb Burger and the Fish Burger. Vegetarians don’t fret. You have a couple of gourmet versions too. The Tofu Burger, with a tofu and sweet potato patty and sprouts and the Shrooms burger, a mushroom feast complete with pulled oyster and button mushrooms, and mushroom chips in a ciabatta bun are some delish options to dig into. Go Vegan is their vegan number {who knew vegan burgers were possible?}, with black rice, tofu, pickled leeks, and tomato aioli in a multi-grain bun.
All the burgers come with homemade slaw and a side of fries. Pick between the sweet potato fries, potato wedges, tapioca chips and shoestring fries to munch on in between bites.
