What to eat

Cafe of Joy specialises in German bakes and cakes as owner and baker Joy Basu has trained from Akademie Deutsches BackerhandwerkGermany. So expect meaty German sausages, wholesome pastries, potato gullets and salads, and meatloaf. We started off with poached chicken sandwich, served with a salad of cucumber, tomato and sprouts tossed in mayo. While the chicken mince was spicy, too much mayo buried the chicken somewhere deep inside. We had no such complaints from the lamb cutlets though. Three generous cutlets: mutton mince shaped into patties with billed potatoes and spices, were shallow fried until they achieved a golden crust. A right hand of black pepper gave the cutlets enough bite without taking away the blander flavours of the meat and potatoes.

Do try the Lemon Curd and Dark Chocolate tart here. The lemon curd is tangy and not so sweet and goes rather well with the gooey dark chocolate encased in a buttery pie crust.

What to drink

Try the Cold Cappuccino, which they will even make without sugar and deliver a competent, creamy version. Ours, though made with instant coffee, was creamy and had a slight buttery taste and we didn’t miss the sugar at all { you could ask for sugar syrup on the side}. The fruity sodas are all refreshing, but the juices are all poured out of a tetra pack.

The DL on the ambience

Pretty as a picture, Cafe of Joy might be tiny, but the lavender and white colour scheme, distressed garden furniture, floral cushions and cute knick-knacks {representing Germany} make for a happy ambience.

So, we're thinking...
