Shortcut
Add Spice To Your Life
What was once a 19th-century orphanage, started and run by philanthropist Rai Bahadur Arcot Narrainsawmy Mudaliar, this bungalow now serves as the home to Cinnamon The Store. Founded in 1999 by Abhishek and Radhika Poddar, the property was purchased over and rebuilt into its current-day state by architect Soumitro Ghosh. The couple also owns Tasveer art gallery, so you know the aesthetics will be on point! Expect a beautiful pebble-lined driveway that leads up to the store, and antique doors serving as their garden decor and up-cycled interiors for a retro feel.
A Touch Of Charm
Inside Cinnamon you will find some of the finest Indian design labels such as Pero, Aavaran, Vivek Narang and Eko to name a few. They carry a selection of well-curated clothing: cotton and silk dresses, tops, jackets, saris, scarves and palazzo pants, in hues of indigo to bold block prints. They also have a wonderful range of trendy home decor, from kitchenware to upholstery for the living room and your bedroom. If you’re looking for some quirky range of knick-knacks, check out their handmade paper mâché crows, or their bronzed peepal tree statues.
The store also stocks jewellery, comprised of their in-house brand, handmade in Karnataka. You won’t know which direction to look at first — think modern aesthetics with antique touches. Not content with being a regular boutique, Cinnamon has taken it one step forward, turning its beautiful courtyard {complete with natural sunlight filtering in, giant urns and stately pillars} as a gateway to a bunch of other boutiques it hosts. At the heart of the courtyard is Cafe Cassia, run by chef Abhijit Saha {Of Fava and Caperberry restaurants} who specialises in light and healthy mediterranean food.
