What Makes It Awesome

If you want to visit Diva (Sanskrit for “Day”), you’ll have to book an appointment in advance. That’s only because the store has a limited space and you really need all the time you can afford to explore the beautiful collection of sarees (each with an interesting story behind it) that Sumana Kukke, the shop owner, has single-handedly collected since 2014. Travelling and working with weavers across the country she brings home the loveliest sarees you can lay your eyes on.

What caught our eye was Diva’s collection of Ahilya sarees (named after Ahilya Bai Holkar, who was the pioneer of the weaving movement in Maheshwar). With their understated elegance, they’re light, airy and with a glossy finish. You’ll also find chanderi silk sarees (translated to ‘Shashimukhi’ in Sanskrit) with simple floral motifs or with opulent embroidery. If you’re not already awestruck, you will be when you see the tussar silk, pure cotton and Banarasi weaves in the shop. The best part? Sumana will patiently explain the origin of each saree that she has carefully handpicked for her store, so you will be taking home a little piece of history with you.

Apart from sarees, you’ll find clutches made of paithani silk and readymade blouses starting from INR 1,500 (you can get them altered within the store). And while the store used to stock up on terracotta jewellery, it has been since removed from their collection. Don’t let that dishearten you though! Sumana told us that she’s considering bringing it back again.

Pro Tip

Since Sumana keeps travelling, she adds to the website as and when she is free, so if you want to stay updated, keep a lookout at their social media channels.
