Music lovers, you have to go check out the Indian Music Experience Museum in JP Nagar. Similar to the Museum of Pop Culture (aka the Experience Music Project) in Seattle, this one is educational as it is a treat to visit. Outside are various interactive instruments cum sculptures that really display the mechanics of music called the Sound Garden that’s a delight for kids and adults alike.

Inside are around eight sections with storyboards and exhibits that detail the history of music, right from the first recorder, to the latest in music tech. Learn about various styles of music be it folk music and travelling puppet shows, the contribution of Indian music stalwarts like MS Subbalakshmi, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and Ustad Bismillah Khan among others. These are accompanied with listening stations and screens with examples, rare footage and soundbytes. Other installations detail the golden era of Bollywood (music) and we love the room with instruments and iPads that play their sounds. There are also plenty of consoles where you can make and record music (a mini studio too!). It’ll take you a good couple of hours to experience the whole thing and you exit into the store with books, stationery, merch, and toys too.

They also have multiple exhibitions, performances, screenings, popups and events all centred around music. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday. Weekday timings are between 10 AM to 6 PM (last ticket sold at 5 PM), and weekends - 11 AM to 7 PM. Ticket prices on weekdays are INR 150 and INR 250 on weekends.

Pro-Tip

Music classes, workshops, seminars and music focused events are often conducted here as IME is also a learning centre for anyone with an interest in music. You can also volunteer with them for their exhibitions or per their requirements.
