We started our journey towards Kolar. It is around 80kms from Bangalore. We visited the ancient Someshwara temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Though the temple is reconstructed using Vijayanagara architecture, it is believed to have originated in Chola dynasty. It has a large gopuram in the entrance and ancient carvings of elephants frolicking all over the temple walls.
Around 500m from this temple, we have Kolaramma temple. It is dedicated to Goddess Parvati, who is worshipped as Kolaramma. It is constructed using South Indian architecture by the Cholas. We were surprised to see ancient Tamil inscriptions on the temple walls inside. Another interesting fact is you are not supposed to worship the deity by looking at it directly. We have to use the mirror which is placed opposite to the idol.
Next we started towards the Kottilingeshwara temple in Kolar. It has the largest and tallest Shivalinga in Asia. Also the idea behind this temple is to have 1 Crore Lingas in one place. There are lots of Lingas in all sizes donated by different devotees all over the world. And all the Lingas are numbered. It felt more like a tourist spot than a temple to me.
