    It's A Gut Feeling!

    When you  go to pick up your first bottle of kombucha, You peer at the innocent tea based drink and wonder — “Why on earth am I drinking bacteria ?” Ashwini aka the Gutnanji is sweet enough to get into the details of all the three fermented drinks she makes at home. Her main goal is to heal your gut so to speak.

    Taste Test

    I tried all three drinks. kombucha, which is made from sweetened tea that’s been fermented by a Symbiotic Colony of Bacteria and Yeast {a SCOBY}. Milk kefir, on the other hand is a fermented dairy product similar in many ways to yogurt and buttermilk, and also made with kefir grains which is made out of bacteria and yeast. Finally water kefir is a probiotic beverage made with water kefir grains.

    What We Loved

    So each drink has its own distinctive taste — the kombucha is like a fizzy iced tea with a tang. While the milk kefir is like the curd your grandmother left in a humid kitchen and you were forced to drink it. It is tangy, and it is sour, but in a good way. The water kefir is like watered down toddy or coconut water with a kick. The watered down toddy taste made the Malayalee in me wonder if I could add it to my appam batter. Good for the gut after all.

    For me personally i have seen wonders with my stomach, food gets digested easily, you feel happy . But having said that you need a diet which compliments it. You can’t eat one whole pizza and expect kombucha to do all the dirty work. But  atleast you would not feel uncomfortable or gassy.  As it really helps in digestion.

    A Happy Tummy

    The drinks have to be put in the fridge as the gasses might pop the lid out. Drink half a glass every day of any of the three drinks and it should help you in the following ways. No more embarassing burping in meetings or lifting of left butt cheek to send out a discrete, but deadly toot in the office and a overall feel good factor.

    There are many who claim they make these drinks, but always ask where they got the SCOBY, if possible ask if you can look at it {looks like a mushroom} and how many years have they been doing this.
