Skin Sense has locally produced, handmade, organic-certified products designed specifically for doggies.

For Bangalorean Payal Sarda Rajendran, who trained in soap making in New York, her devotion to pet Labrador Neo was the inspiration for a line of natural, vegan cosmetics for dogs. Her first product — a hypoallergenic shampoo containing coconut, neem, olive and castor oils — was developed specifically for Neo’s skin issues, but was so popular with his city-based groomer that it was tweaked and developed for use on other dogs.

The range now has two kinds of shampoo {Cooling & Healing, or Anti Tick & Flea}, which are free from artificial colours, fragrances, parabens and alcohol. They contain USDA-certified organic ingredients, many of which are from South Indian farms, making them particularly suitable for pets with sensitive skin. Cold-pressed massage oils are another staple of the range, designed to take pet pampering to a whole new level. Apart from calming and anti-flea, there’s also an oil specifically for pain relief, which harnesses the power of ginger, peppermint and marjoram essential oils, and is particularly good for keeping older pets with conditions like arthritis comfortable, according to Payal.

More in the way of alternative therapy is available in the form of Golden Paste – a mixture of coconut and turmeric which has anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial properties, useful for naturally treating ear infections, yeast and fungal infections. For something a bit more indulgent, Skin Sense also has patented paw balm and snout butter. Yup, that’s right. That’s essentially lip balm and foot/hand cream, but for your four-legged friend. The former has organic shea butter as a key ingredient while the latter uses patented organic vitamin E oil.
