Science Meets Art at the Sixth Edition of the Annual Handmade Collective

Ten-second takeaway

A collective solely dedicated to handmade arts and crafts, the Handmade Collective is back with its sixth edition.

A crafty time

Started in 2010 by A Hundred Hands {a not-for-profit organisation aimed at promoting handmade crafts}, the Annual Handmade Collective is all set for its sixth edition. Bringing together over 80 craft groups from across the country, the event will showcase the best of their works. If the thought of handmade crafts, accessories and stationery is not enough to lure you, we think their interesting theme of 'Science in Art' should do the trick. Apart from the concept of incorporating science into the products, the theme is also about encouraging the public to know more about the science behind traditional crafts. Intriguing, we think.

Handmade goodies

Already wondering about what you might find? You get to choose from apparel, accessories, household goods, toys, plants and foodstuff. Make sure you check out the customised jewellery featuring traditional patwa work {an age-old form of threadwork} by Vishnu and the stylish, knitted warmers in bright colours by She Who Knits. There are also enough examples of science behind crafts to fascinate you - be it the glass crafter using basic chemistry, the embroiders with their complex geometrical designs or the knitters who employ binary principles to weave shapes.

More in store

While you're at it, we suggest you also take part in their interactive workshops. What's more, there's something for your little ones, too. Titled Dirty Your Hands, this session for kids lets them learn basic science using craft as well as make toys from junk. Conducted in collaboration with Innovation and Science Promotion Foundation {a non-profit organisation that promotes innovation and science among children}, the workshop will also include delivery of Arvind Gupta toys {delightful toys by the popular Indian toy inventor for your kiddies}. Sounds like a perfect way to spend the weekend with your family, we think.
