With makeup being bigger than ever now, we’re seeing Sephoras and Bobbi Browns pop up all over the city. And as much as we love Fenty Beauty and the Gigi Hadid X Maybelline collection, there are some homegrown makeup labels that are just as great at keeping our lips tinted and cheekbones on fleek. With Lakme spearheading the makeup movement in India in 1952, the path for great Indian beauty and makeup brands was paved and we’ve seen some great labels pop up since. From big players in the international makeup arena and others smaller labels that you ought to know about, here’s a list of our favourite indie makeup brands.
Wake Up And Makeup: Show Some Love To These Amazing Indie Makeup Brands
Touted as India's first makeup brand that is also vegan, Disguise Cosmetics is an LBB crew favourite! Their lipsticks are unbeatable in terms of colour payoff and they're affordable (most of their lippies cost only between INR 500 and INR 700). They also make a black lipstick! What else? If you browse through their collection on LBB you will also find highlighter sticks, nail paints and kajal too. All made with natural ingredients for you!
Tinge By Sabrina
The name of this awesome women-led, homegrown makeup brand says it all. Vegan, eco-friendly and make up that will make you shine even more is what they do and do well. We recommend Sonaturals' Cream Base Highlighters, their all natural Styling Hair Wax and the lovely Lipsticks. The Nude Coffee shade is such a must-have. If you are kajal obsessed, do get yourself the Ghee and Camphor Kajal (available on LBB) or head here for a whole list on kajals!
CAL Los Angeles
CAL Los Angeles is an Indian makeup brand that you should make your go-to for all things beauty. From Pore Correcting Primers to Concealers, Foundations, to Eyeshadow Palettes, Contour Kits to Lipsticks, this brand stocks it all and at really, really affordable prices. Everything on LBB ranges between INR 250 to INR 750.
Starting off as an online retailer of other beauty brands, Nykaa launched its very own beauty line with nail enamel, before moving onto lipsticks, eye and face products and a few beauty tools (yes! beauty blenders are a part of this). We love the range of nail enamel that comes in dreamy shades that are pretty hard to find elsewhere (the cookie crumble range of shades is one of our faves; we love that they have inbuilt patterns that switch up your look easily). Their Crayon Lipsticks are another standout and come in a cool range of reds and nudes.
Keeping it fun and flirty, we love the pop of colour Sugar’s lipsticks bring to our look. Available in mauves, salmon and magenta, play around with colours and textures as you can pick between matte, liquid and crayon lipsticks. Want to experiment with lines and angles? Get contouring with their face palettes and maybe add a hint of their blush. All of their products are also cruelty-free and some even vegan!
Keeping it natural, Enn’s Closet is helping us doll up without any of the chemical side effects. Yep! This brand is all about wholesome natural ingredients like honey, aloe, clay and butter, so much so that you can even shop their products by its main ingredient. And just cause it’s all natural, don’t expect a boring and tame makeup range. From eye-popping pinks to luscious browns, they’ve got a lipstick for every one of your moods. They’ve also got an all natural skincare range that might tickle your fancy.
Barva is another entry on this list that takes an all-natural approach to beauty. From a foundation with SPF to a Glow Creme, there’s plenty on offer to give your skin an added glow, all without the help of any parabens. You can get your hands on natural kajal and lipsticks too, all under INR 400.
Started by Rubeina K, Ruby’s Organics also has its heart in the right place, as they use only natural and organically sourced ingredients in their pretty extensive makeup range. With crayon lipsticks, concealers, highlighters, eyeshadow and blushes in their inventory, you can score a whole look that’s completely chemical-free. We think chemical-free concealer and foundation is the way to go and we’ve ordered ours already.
Claiming to be the first and only Indian beauty brand that’s certified 100 per cent natural by BDIH, Germany, it’s a no-brainer why SoulTree found its way onto our list. The indie label’s pure black kajal alone is enough for us to swoon over. Available in not just black but deep greens, bright blues and greys, this kajal is made entirely of natural ingredients like organic ghee, camphor, almond oil and natural pigments. Other beauty goodies on offer include their Ayurvedic lipsticks in a host of pink and red hues.
