Gourmet Ingredients And Exotic Sauces, Courtesy Sprig

Bourbon vanilla {sourced from Madagascar}, Thai Nam Prik Pao, Rosemary and Lavender infused Sea Salt and many other gourmet ingredients, pastes and sauces fill shelf space on Kerala brand Sprig’s e-commerce site.

All Spiced Up

If you have always wondered why the best of spices and ingredients from the country always makes it to foreign shores, and all we get are the left overs, then Kerala brand Sprig might have set out to change that situation. The good folks at Sprig bring to you a range of finishing oils {chilli and sesame}, gourmet salts and sugars {Demerrara sugars infused with vanilla, cinnamon and brown spices}, gourmet spice blends, a medley of peppers, pastes and sauces from other countries {Wasabi, Harissa, Nam Prik Pao and Mole}, paprika {sweet and smokey} and more.

Tried And Tested

While I have tried their Six Pepper Medley {a mix of black, white, green, pink, Cubeb and Sichuan peppers} and their absolutely lovely smokey paprika {a wee pinch is enough to perk up pastas and scrambled eggs} before, I decided to try out some of the other fine offerings from Sprig for this review. The Demerrera sugar infused with vanilla came across as a bit too intense for regular tea or coffee, but it would probably be more at home being added to fluffy cake batters. The Rosemary and Lavender-infused Sea Salt was perfect to marinate fish with before being grilled on a hot girdle. All we did was add some freshly ground pepper and a squeeze of lime. The Ginger Teriyaki was a bit too sweet and, shall we say too “gingery”, for our liking. But we had no such complaints from the Nam Prik Pao, a sweet and fiery Thai chilli paste, that we used to stir fry veggies, and also made a dip with, with Sprig’s Toasted Sesame Oil {fine and sublime nutty flavours}, and moped it up with potato wedges.

The pepper and salt mills, need easier mechanisms to work them. The instruction confused us and it took us some time to figure out how to work the mills. The Demerrera sugar came in a beautiful glass jar and we were fully planning to put it to good use for future stocks, when the clasp to the lid, broke on the first attempt at opening. We are looking forward to easier and better packaging from you, Sprig folks.
