Avarekalu Vade To Payasa: Celebrate The Harvest Festival With A Vegetarian Feast

Makara Sankranti, the Hindu New Year that also marks a change in the seasons is almost upon us, so we're declaring you treat yourself before the days get longer! For this, head straight to Oota at Whitefield between 14 and 17 January and dig into a special menu curated for the occasion. Not only does the Sankranti menu celebrate the rich harvest, it also showcases the best of Karnataka's vegetarian recipes using avarekalu or hyacinth beans (a vegetable native to this festival).

It's an ala carte menu so you can pick between Avarekalu Masala Vade with coconut chutney or Stuffed Menasinaki Bajji for starters, moving on to mains like Avarekalu Bath (hyacinth bean with rice), Yenne Badnekai Sukkha (stuffed fried brinjal). Since it's Sankranti, there has to be the traditional sweet and savoury rice pongal called Sihi Matu Khara Huggi Anna. The menu also has traditional drinks (raw mango and jaggery cooler) and a signature Avarekalu Payasa (hyacinth beans cooked in coconut milk, jaggery, cardamom) for dessert.

Best to take your family out here to enjoy lunch (12 pm to 3 pm) or dinner (7 pm to 11 pm). Prices stand at INR 1,200 plus taxes per guest. Happy New Year!
