Started in 2015 by Deepa Chauhan, Mortars and Pestles packs a punch with its fresh, preservative-free Thai pastes and Middle Eastern spices. Chauhan was never a big fan of the store-bought spice mixes and pastes as they are loaded with preservatives and the package instructions always demand the addition of exotic, fresh ingredients that aren't easily available. So, she started making her own Thai curry pastes at home. Luckily for us, her hobby became a business when she got stuck with a huge load of fresh ingredients and had to distribute her flavourful pastes among neighbours and friends and then to cafes and local caterers.
Today, Mortars and Pestles is not only delivering to these guys but is also offering its homemade creations to city folks who can place their orders online on their IG page or Whatsapp Deepa. Made with farm-fresh ingredients sourced from across the country, you can pick anything from Thai Yellow, Green and Red Curry paste to Tom Kha and Tom Yum soup pastes, Satay Spice Mix and more.
Their Middle Eastern spice mixes and pastes menu includes Harissa paste, Za’atar, Toum, and Shawarma pastes. Mortars and Pestles is also apparently the only brand in Bangalore to retail homemade Mouneh (Middle Eastern pickle), pomegranate molasses and preserved lemons. All of these are 100 per cent vegetarian and come with shelf-life of 3 months to 2 years (depending on how you store them and the nature of the spice). She even does customisations for some of the spice mixes. Prices begin from INR 150 for 100 grams.
