This Homestay In Munnar Is Perfect For Family Time, Amidst Misty Hills

Nestled high amidst the hills of Munnar, Olive Brook is a lovely homestay comprising cottages, and offers stunning views, wherever you look.

    Home Away From Home

A sweeping driveway, with flowering plants bordering the path, greets you as you enter Olive Brook. The look and feel of the place is definitely like your favourite uncle’s cottage nestled in the hills. On our way to Olive Brook, through meandering hills roads, the atmosphere suddenly changed from sunny to misty and Dementor {Harry Potter, remember?} weather. Such is the charm of living in the hills. Though the ground floor cottages are cute, we’d say pick the ones which are located on a slight elevation, accessible by stairs. Each cottage is kitted out with an ante room, dining room, bathroom, a bedroom, the window of which opens out to the glorious hills and an outdoor deck. Plus, modern trappings such as hot water, WiFi, and a television.

    House Special Meals

If you are travelling with kids or even an infant or toddler, Olive Brook will take care of all baby food arrangements. In case you want to cook food for your child, then you can use the homestay’s separate kitchen, used for their cooking classes {offers to guests for an extra fee}. They can also arrange for milk and all kinds of kiddie suitable food too.

Though the food is a bit pricey, it is worth ordering because their home-style dals, vegetable curries and snacks are so good. A special recommendation goes out to their fish fries and country-style chicken curry. Beer is freely available on request and they also offer several kinds of teas {after all you are in Munnar}. Breakfast is standard with fruits, bread-butter, omelettes, or idli and dosa, with tea or coffee, of course.

Of Tea Gardens, Avocado Shopping, And Top Views

Once you have left your luggage in your room and eaten lunch, we suggest you go for a walk down the meandering paths surrounding the cottages. The Olive Brook’s estate itself offers secret paths along which you can discover flowering plants, trees and even species of butterflies. The weather is mercurial here and very soon you will be walking with your head in the clouds. A 10-minute drive {you can hire taxi from Olive Brook} will take you to Munnar’s beautiful and unending tea gardens. Set off on a walk down the tea estates, as the sun prepares to set. Once evening sets in, drive down to explore Munnar town, where there are several shops where you can buy fancy vanilla pods, lovely Kerala spices, and flavoured teas. There are plenty of restaurants in town, but nothing fancy. We do suggest you shop for some avocados aka butter fruit {locally grown in Munnar} here, because you can buy them for as cheap as INR 10 a piece.

Munnar tends to be tourist trap, so wherever you go, you will find hoards of people. If you are willing to stand that, then you can check out Top Station, where the views are just stunning, Kundala lake which is perfect for picnics and boat rides, if you can photoshop those annoying tourists out of your Instagram images.

    So, We're Thinking...

We love Olive Brook because it is located a little away from the madding crowds and you will only find peace and quiet here. So kick back, relax and curl up up with a book and tea.
