We Found A Secret Paradise For Trekkers: Parunthumpara Near Thekkady, Kerala

    Navya posted on 22 September

    Shortcut

Accessible from Thekkady and Munnar, Parunthumpara is an untouched, scenic spot that is fast becoming a favourite with trekkers. Once you’ve reached the top, you’ll be treated to sweeping views of forests, mist-covered hills, and valleys.

    Walk The Walk

A no-show on popular travel brochures and websites, Parunthumpara is a hidden gem in Kerala’s picturesque Idukki district. If you are holidaying at nearby Thekkady, Munnar, and Wagamon, you can easily swing by this picturesque stop. Except for a leisurely half-day trek, there’s not much to do here so Parunthumpara is best suited for a quick visit.

This part of Kerala offers breathtaking views so don’t take forget to have your camera on standby. For the trek, it is best you start off at Peermade, a scenic village that’s surrounded by tea plantations and sits at the edge of Parunthumpara. At the village, you can stock up on basic supplies like waters and snacks before you get going.

The Maharajas of Travancore used to once escape to Peermade during the summers. So, if you have time, wander the streets of this charming town dotted with estate bungalows, gurgling brooks that run through plantations, and old-world buildings. Once you’ve had your fill, you can shuffle out for the short trek to nearby Parunthumpara.

    Come Out On Top

Since Paruthumpara is at a lower altitude compared to Thekkady and, even, Peermade, the trek is perfect for novices. It will take you a couple of hours {to and fro} from Peermade. And there’s a road {most people prefer to take their vehicles to the top} that you can amble along to get to the viewpoint.

Do note that while tourists may largely skip this spot, Paruthumpara is well-known among locals. So, if you’d like a quiet trek then choose a weekday or come by early in the morning. On your way up, you’ll make your way through open green meadows and small patches of shrubbery.

    Vantage Point

At the top, there’s a gated viewpoint from where you can catch the mist-cloaked hills {especially in the hours after sunrise}. The hills come carpeted in forests and seem endless. In fact, if you are here on a clear day, you can even spot the Sabarimala hills in the distance. Paruthumpara also offers spectacular sunsets. And you can sit up and watch as the sky lights up in a fiery orange before the sun disappears behind the hills.
