Their piquant tamarind rice of course and the authentic home-style taste

All-time favourites

Drawing a steady stream of customers {right from students to senior citizens} throughout the day, Puliyogre Point is known for the sour and spicy Puliyogare {tamarind rice} it serves. Be it the simple Puliyogare, the Sakkar Pongal {a traditional rice pudding dish which is mostly prepared during festive occasions} or the usual breakfast options {from idlis and vadas to bisi bele bath and shavige bath}, you will be spoilt for choice here.

Digging in

Not bothering with second thoughts, we ordered a portion of Puliyogare which came with a bowl of curd. Cooked with crunchy peanuts, slightly tangy and with just enough spice to please our palate, the dish was an instant favourite. Next came the Sakkar Pongal {cooked with jaggery and made richer with ghee and cashewnuts} and we happily scooped up spoonfuls of the gooey, thick concoction. While it may be too sweet for some, the dish is a hit with those who are familiar with it, especially considering it’s not regularly served in restaurants. End your meal here with a tumbler of strong filter coffee. If you’re looking for something lighter, try their Masala Idlis or the Ambode Vada {vadas made with split chickpeas}. For lunch, they also offer Mini Meals – a regular spread of rice, rotis, curries and curd.

The DL on the ambience

With a slightly rustic ambience, the dive is divided into two parts – the counter and cooking area with a few tables {standing space only} on one side and a simple seating space on the other. Although tucked away in a bylane, the place can get quite crowded during lunch time, thanks to the tasty fare they dish out. So, we suggest you try getting there early if a lunch plan is on the cards.

So, we’re thinking…

Whether you’re looking for satisfying meals or quick snacks {of the typical South Indian kind, of course}, Puliyogare Point is worth bookmarking.
