Ranga Shankara's Festival Brings Plays From Beyond The Metros

Ten-Second Takeaway

Ranga Shankara is back with another edition of their weeklong Theatre Festival, and this time around, they're focusing on the state of theatres in cities beyond the metros.

Beyond Metros

Bringing together an entire week of plays, Ranga Shankara has an all-new edition of their annual Theatre Festival to look out for. Going with the theme, Not The Metros, this year's festival hopes to look beyond the metro cities in India, focusing on questions and issues that theatres in the smaller mofussils engage with. Sticking to this concept, the curated lineup includes plays from cities like Mysore, Jalna {Maharashtra}, Joganduppa {Assam} and Kota {Rajasthan}. Adding to the celebration of different cultures, you'll also get to tuck in to sweets from the region specific to the day's play!

Taking Over The Stage

Delving into everything from folk tales to social satire, there are eight plays which will be performed over the week. We're hoping to watch Shivaji Underground in Bhimnagar Mohalla, a critically acclaimed play from Jalna {Maharashtra} which hopes to bust the myths related to the erstwhile ruler, Shivaji. Pondicherry-based theatre company, Indianostrum Theatre brings One Third, depicting the tale of two brothers and a sister who face an army recapturing areas held by rebels. While you're at it, don't miss To' Paidom, an Assamese play based on a Rabha {a Scheduled Tribe community of Assam and some other regions} folk tale.

Apart from the plays, the festival will also include events like the Directors' Round Table Discussion with young theatre directors from across the country, the Theatre and Arts Appreciation Course which will be held over two weekends and the unveiling of Musui, a sculpture by artist, KS Radhakrishnan.
