Shortcut

A short drive from Madikeri, the Rare Earth Estate stands ensconced in acres of coffee plantations, offering travellers the chance of an ideal escape from chaotic city life.

Estate Exquisite

Rare Earth is a new estate that oozes old world charm. Just over a year old, the homestay is run by Revathi Iyer and, her husband, Yogesh Krishnaswamy, who left behind thriving careers {she’s a danseuse, he is a hospitality professional} to start off their dream venture.

An 8km drive from Madikeri will get you to the Rare Earth Estate. The main house is surrounded by a well-tended garden and resembles many of the traditional homes in the region. The sloping, red-tiled roof features a sprinkling of glass tiles too that allow sunlight to pour in as you lounge in the tastefully decorated living room or while you cosy up with a book in the library. We also love their vintage doors and window frames that have been sourced from demolished homes from around the country. And, also, their deep-hued floor tiles that have been handpainted by artisans in Tamil Nadu. Once you have taken in your charming surroundings, you can settle into your enormous bedrooms {there are three in the main house and two built separately}.

Sights ‘n’ Sounds

The biggest advantage of holidaying at Rare Earth is that while you can soak up the serene surroundings undisturbed, you are not too far away from all the tourist spots in Coorg. You can easily access Madikeri and historic sights like Raja’s Tomb, Raja’s Seat, and Omkareshwar Temple. You can also visit the religiously-significant Talakaveri and Bhagmandala and also pay a visit to the gushing Abbey Falls during a day’s outing. A little more than an hour’s drive and you can even reach the Tibetan Monasteries at Bylakuppe, and the Dubare Elephant Camp.

Back at the estate, apart from gazing at the mist-covered hills and roaming the plantation, you can snooze in hammocks and also spend nights by the bonfire. Your room tariff includes breakfast and dinner buffets, and we insist that you don’t miss these. The staff is known to put up delicious meals filled with local flavours and, sometimes, even feature fresh produce from their vegetable patch.
