If you’re looking to make a difference and give someone a second chance at life, you actually can. We’ve come across a non-profit called DKMS-BMST with a mission to give as many blood cancer and blood disorder patients a second chance at life. They’re actually saving lives- 28 to be precise and this is just the beginning!
For most patients affected with blood cancer the only chance of recovery is a stem cell transplant, and while a small percentage (40%) of these patients find a sibling match, most of them depend on finding an unrelated matching donor. This is where EACH one of us can be of help. DKMS-BMST at present has over 42,000 registered potential blood stem cell donors and you can be a lifesaver too! All it takes is five minutes of your time and a simple 3 step process.
Step 1: visit the site, fill up an online form and you will receive a DIY swab kit at home.
Step 2: once you receive the swab kit, fill out the consent form and take a tissue sample from the inside of your cheeks with 3 cotton swabs provided in the kit.
Step 3: Send back your swabs sample in the pre-paid envelope provided. Once the swab kit is sent back to DKMS-BMST, your tissue type gets analysed in the lab and your details will be available to help any patient across the globe!
If you do come up as a suitable match, DKMS-BMST will get in touch with you straight away, and begin the stem cell donation process which is similar to blood platelet donation. It’s completely safe and a non-surgical outpatient procedure so you have nothing to worry about.
So what are you waiting for? You can be someone’s superhero today, with DKMS-BMST!
