Runners, You Gotta Plan Your Calendar For 2017 And Start Training Now

Monica posted on 17 January

Bangalore has a rich and long heritage of a lasting love for the sport of distance running. As long as 11 years back, a large contingent of men and women, would be found congregating at platform 9 & 3/4 … oh sorry.. at Bangalore Airport {then at HAL}, on the third Saturday of January, using mysterious phrases like, “negative splits”, “ITBS”, “fartlek”. These people were amateur long distance runners —people just like you and me, except, on most mornings, they’d get into running clothes and shoes and push themselves to run longer and harder than the week before. And then do post run stretches, and head to work. At that time, this curious group was making their annual pilgrimage to Mumbai for the annual Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon, India’s oldest marathon, and half marathon event.

Cut to present: amateur runners have never had it so awesome! Every weekend, they are spoilt for choice, with running groups, running businesses and event organisers enticing them with all kinds of distances and race formats. So, here’s our definitive guide of running races you shouldn’t miss in and around Beantown!

The money raised goes to a great cause — last year, they raised money for treatment of disadvantaged children infected with HIV. What is Raramuri, you ask? Kaveri Trail Marathon

The 3rd weekend of September, when the purple flowers are on the sugarcane plants, the paddy fields are verdant, the egret is in his watery perch, runners are in running heaven, and all’s right with the world. Browning’s poetic references aside, this is India’s oldest trail race. Over the weekend, the narrow but beautiful trail hosts people, for whom the KTM, as it is fondly called, is a bucket list race. September 16 sees the 10k being run and on the 17th the half marathon & marathon take place.

Only into its second edition, this one is one of the most talked about events. Not for the faint of heart, as this is an ultra marathon — that is, more than 42kms in distance. So, the shortest distance you can do at this race is a 50km race to be completed in 9 hours (yes, there are cut off times, to make it competitive). If you are a runner of some experience, you could go for the 80km {15 hours} or the 110km {24 hours. Yes, that’s 24 hours of running}. Oh wait. The arena is the Malnad mountains near Chikmagalur. You are running through beautiful coffee plantations. Aid station support comes via the staff at these estates, who know the area like the backs of their palms.

Options to raise money for charity exist across categories, and the race takes extra care to ensure there are well-known runners, who perform their duties as pacers for all distances,  so you can go after that elusive personal best timing.
