What we ate and drank
Ditching the tandoori starters, we chose to focus on chef Dmitri’s creations. Staple savoury pancake parcels of chicken and turkey with sour cream were spot on. Mini kievs, oozing mince chicken in herb butter, is a hotseller. But it’s the Chilly Chicken Tipple Style which is as experimental as Colin Firth in Kingsman, and packs a real punch. Take things down a notch with Pelmini, Vareniki and Manti {a cross between ravioli and momos) – stuffed with meats and veggies, and different sauces. Pick the chef’s to-die-for stroganoff to play it safe. Or Krupenik – the Russian wheat version of risotto, Vitki {chicken roulade} or staples from Europe including pies, pastas and steaks.
Liquid diet
Straight from Volgograd and Moscow come the bar lads, so forget about mixers and diluted cocktails. The simple {or so we thought} Sex on The Beach left us buzzing thanks to a copious dosage of vodka. But the Helmet Shot which is a barman special and is Top Secret, comes with an added drama of a helmet and another activity which we can’t reveal because one never messes with Russian secrecy. Rest assured it’ll get to your head, in a good way!
The DL on ambience
Decked out in quirky caricatures, wooden tables, sofas, wrought iron chairs and even communist flags, you’ll be taken to a different level of calm.
