Dumpling Exotica

Imagine a whole meal full of only dumplings? No starters to begin with, no main course to lead into. The Dumpling Sensation Food Festival at Shiro is just that. Start the binge fest here with chunks of steamed lobster packed in a translucent wrapper with a hint of truffle oil. Another interesting dish to try is the mushroom and cream cheese-flavoured dumpling with a mild essence of celery and coriander, served in a shallow broth. I was expecting a mouthful of cheese to blow me away, but it wasn't overwhelming at all. So if you don't like the overpowering taste of cheese, then this is a great option. The wasabi prawn dumplings prepared in a Japanese style quickly became a favourite too.

Apart from the exotic variety, I was really quite spoiled for choice when it came to the options with the humble chicken filling too! My vote goes to the dumplings with a combination of five spices and hot basil. For anyone not looking to experiment much, these are perfect too.

Shaken, Stirred, Surprised

The range of "martinis" accompanying the dumplings fest had me a little bit confused, because I've known the drink to be gin-based, but they had options with vodka and whiskey as well! The {gin-based} one with peach and Thai chili was a hit thanks to a mild kick of chilli complemented by the sweet peach. I also really liked the vodka-based martini made with an unusual mix of rosemary and pomegranate, but the whiskey-based vanilla and sweet sherry martini was a bit too strong for my taste. But all served with a bowl of dry ice underneath the stemless martini glass, no less.

Sweet Nothings

A bit sad {but also relieved since I was already full}  to see only two options, I skipped the chocolate bao in favour of the lotus bean bao. While I wouldn't call it dessert, it tasted great. In fact, it's much like our good old puran poli.

So, We're Thinking…

There's no beef or salmon options and just two pork ones, so don't go looking for that. However, I'd definitely go back for the sticky rice stuffed with chicken sausage and shiitake mushroom.
