Going east

With Chef Priyank Chouhan constantly wanting to change things up on the menu, without letting go of old-favourites, Shiro now sports a spanking new menu. And we spied less oft-seen options such as the Black Angus, Sea Bass and lamb chops taking centre stage. While drinks and dessert remain unchanged, and popular dishes like Peking Duck, Sushi, Sashimi, Maki Rolls and Mi Goreng still maintain pride of place on the menu, we chose to only attack the newbies. We ordered dim sum, and a vast offering of them arrived. We highly recommend the new Phoenix Eye ones, which are prawns in tossed in ginger vinegar and the fiery Sichuan Pepper Dumplings which plump up the flavour of minced chicken. Vegetarians must try the Potato Cubes with Yakitori sauce, and then never again complain that meat eaters have better starters than them!

Uniting Asia

Encompassing more of South East Asia, Cambodian curried prawns, in a typical Khmer style {meaning coconut milk, turmeric and lemon grass dominates} should be had with steamed rice. Heat things up with the grilled Black Bean Prawns, brought on a mini grill to your table. The honey-glazed shrimp acquires a divine smoky flavour right at the table, so let it grill for about ten minutes before tucking in. Vegetarians can enjoy an assortment of mushroom in a Thai sauce. Not a red, yellow or green curry, this one is filled with herbs – high on fragrance. While the Black Angus Steak in Black Bean Sauce is part of the starters, pick it or Caramelised Belgian pork in the famous seven-spice oriental paste. For sharing purposes, order the Chilean Sea Bass. The fish nicely soaks up the orange and lime reduction with chilli balancing the flavour beautifully.
