Bawa Peg Pairings
Bambaiya offerings are the stars of the starters menu. There’s the Chicken Baida Roti that pays homage to the famed Baida Roti from Bade Miyan. Crispy fried Chicken Farcha {a Parsi creation} will also pair well with your drink. And so will the Bhendi Bazaar Sheekh Paratha that originated in the busy lanes of Bartan Market and combines the juiciness of the minced meat with the crispiness of the paratha. You can also sink your teeth into the Chicken Cutlis Pav or the bacon version. The Carnivore’s Bhel adds chicken and slivers of bacon to the classic Chowpatty creation. The Rasta Sandwich {stuffed with veggies}, a favourite with Mumbaiwallas is also a worthy pick.
While you munch on these, you can sip on bar offerings like The BumSucker Wala that’s a mixture of vodka, raspberry soda, and thyme. The Mausi Chi {tequila and pineapple} is made of the same delicious flavours that were a hit with Bandra Aunties in the 60s and 70s. Rum lovers can order up the Bombay Julep that combines your tipple with apricot and mint leaves.
Bombay Special
For the mains, you can stick to classic Irani Cafe specials. There’s the Berry Pulao — a fragrant rice dish that’s topped with fried onions, berries, and nuts. You can also dig your fork into Paatra ni Macchi {steamed fish coated in rich spices} or the Dhansak {a thick dish made from lentils and meat}.
There are also daily specials to look forward to. Chicken Sanju Baba {a recipe provided by Sanjay Dutt himself to the legendary restaurant — Noori Mohammadi} is available on Sundays. While the Masoor Ma Gos {mutton cooked in masoor dal} is Wednesday’s highlight.
