What Is It?

French Nouvelle Vague {New Wave} director François Truffaut's classic film The 400 Blows is back again for another screening at Alliance Francaise. Based on the life of a 14-year-old boy, the film follows the adventures of Antoine Doinel. The unsettling atmosphere at home {his mother's having an affair and his parents have no time for him} affects Antoine deeply leading to a downward spiral in his life which gets him into trouble and then lands him in a juvenile facility. Think this is depressing enough? Then just watch the film which is really like a bittersweet slice of life with plenty of comedy, drama and endearing moments.

Who Is It For?

It’s for anyone who enjoys watching world cinema. This coming-of-age {also considered semi autobiographical} film is the first of many in the series made by Truffaut that will mark the life of Antoine Doinel till adulthood and even marriage {all of these films are equally classic}. Don’t know French? Don’t worry, this film has English subtitles for those whose knowledge of the French language only extends to ‘omelette du fromage’ and ‘merci’.

Why Should I Go For It?

This is a French New Wave classic and you need to catch it. Plus, the timelessness and the universality of this film {trust us, we have seen it many times} will make you fall in love with it. And if that’s not convincing enough Rotten Tomatoes has given it an elusive 100 per cent rating too.
