Kids Bring out the Magic of Folk Performances in The Manganiyar Classroom

Ten-second takeaway

Roysten Abel's The Manganiyar Classroom {a surreal show}, comes alive at Ranga Shankara this time around. And you’ll be silly to miss it.

Different kind of classroom

An adapted version of director-playwright Roysten Abel’s stellar The Manganiyar Seduction {with over 100 global shows to its credit}, The Manganiyar Classroom comes to town and will feature a 35-member troupe filled mostly with kids aged between 8 and 14. All the performers are from the unbelievably talented performing community of Manganiyars {from near Jaisalmer} and there’s no recorded score that goes with the show. And from experience we can tell you, it is a show like no other.

Going folk

The plot is simple and sees the kids in a classroom being taught things other than music. Being born Manganiyar, the youngsters absolutely refuse to study anything but music, naturally! So lo and behold, one kind teacher lets them do just that and unleashes the energy and talent. Bring out the powerhouse singers, energetic percussions and buckets that the kids play and produce sounds that you didn’t think possible. We love the way the little performers are as adept at playing the drums as they are a morchung and kartaal, both Rajasthani folk instruments.

With four scheduled shows, courtesy Bhoomija, you just need to book your tickets and wait for folk music, fine performances and very spontaneous art being created right before your eyes.
