This brand is the brainchild of a lady based in Imphal. A Manipuri woman herself, Babyrani has made it a mission to make the traditional weaves of her home state available all over the world.
Manipuri Handlooms is associated with a bunch of weavers across the state. Mostly women, these weavers are following the traditional methods of handloom weaving. They weave sarees and ‘Rani Phees’ (the traditional two cloth set worn by Manipuri women) The weave is known as ‘Moirangphee’ and the fabric choice varies across cotton, mulberry silk and a cotton silk variety known as ‘Russian Silk’.
The motifs on these sarees are mostly traditional that include floral designs , animals such as deer, elephants and other motifs that are popular in the region.
Each saree takes days to weave and is dependant on the complexity of the pattern. The cotton fabric is very ‘Khaadi’ like, albeit softer and the patterns are very similar to the ‘jamdani’ weaving done in Bangladesh and West Bengal.
