What Makes It Awesome

A trip to Kerala's famed Idukki district should be on your road trip checklist if you are looking to drive through long winding roads through canopies. Once you arrive at this green district, set your Google Maps to Thommankuthu Waterfalls. A series of 12 cascading falls that flow through the Thommankuthu forest is what makes this waterfall truly spectacular especially during the monsoons when all the streams are full and gushing through the forest. You can take a dip in the many pools at the bottom or if you are feeling particularly adventurous, there are safe spots for you to climb up the waterfalls.

Since it's an eco-tourism spot, the Kerala Forest Department arranges for trekking and bird watching expeditions for a relatively small fee of INR 30 per person. The trek to the top of the mountain is where you can get your adrenaline rush as you will have to navigate it through the woods and caves. The caves give off Indian Jones vibes and are for catching your breath and spotting wildlife around.

What Could Be Better

Being an eco-tourism spot, the waterfalls is open to the public only from 10 am to 6 pm, so you might want to time your day around it to spend the whole day in and around the area.

Pro-Tip

If you are staying here for the weekend, be sure to visit the other well-known waterfalls in the region -- Nakkayyam Waterfalls. It's a one-day trek that will have you spend the entire day in the forest.
