Backpacking to the backwaters of Kerala got a whole lot easier thanks to Zostel. The Alleppey hostel is bang opposite the beach and with the backwaters in its backyard.

Backpacking In Backwaters

Alleppey might sound like a honeymooner’s paradise with island getaways and palace homestays, but hey, solo travellers and backpackers who are looking to unwind in the backwater township there’s a place for you as well. A place with dorms, common areas, and even private rooms for those looking to backpack with their SO and need some alone time, Zostel Alleppey, is the place to go. A typical Kerala mansion gets the quirky Zostel makeover that we are all to familiar with now. Murals dot the walls and these include Rick & Morty, aliens, and cultural motifs of Kerala (Kathakali and elephants). Quirky and upcycled furniture like tire seats and light fixtures made from bottles fill up the common areas. Icebreakers in the common room come in the form of board games such as Jenga and Anti-Monopoly! Or someone cuddling with Mia, the resident kitten. Strike up a conversation here or head to our favourite spot, the rooftop where hammocks steal the spotlight.

Beach Views And Alleppey

The hostel is bang opposite the Alleppey Beach and from the rooftop and the rooms you can get a beautiful view of the beach. If you haven’t watched a sunset from a hammock, come evenings, head to the rooftop and plop yourself in one of the many hammocks. You just won’t get enough of the views! One of the private rooms looks out to the beach and what’s better than waking up with bae to such a view. The private rooms are priced at INR 999 a night, so hey, it’s on the pocket-friendly side too. If you are looking to just check in and use the hostel purely for sleeping and showering, the dorms start at INR 349 per bed. Just lock your luggage, enquire at the reception if a vehicle can be rented, and if so, book one and explore the township. Or head to the beach first which is a hop, skip, and jump away. We hear kayaking in Alleppey is a must-do and for those who find houseboats to be expensive (it is), you can go for regular boat rides along the backwaters. Stop at one of the many toddy shops that line these backwater canals for lunch or for fun while you are at it! In fact, check out our guide to what do in backwaters of Kerala.
