Zostel’s new property in Coorg offers the best of the Scotland of India — coffee, spices, and Kodagu comfort — at a pocket-friendly fare.

To Bunk Or To Tent

Camping out amidst the wilderness and that salubrious Coorg weather does sound fun, right? Well, backpackers, Zostel Coorg is all about that and more. In a typical Kodagu-style bungalow, Zostel brings its distinct makeover in the form of graffiti on the walls inside, bunk beds that remind you of college days, and of course private tents out in the open {our favourite of the lot}. Add unending greens to the picture and you’ve got yourself a place to check in during the weekends.

While retaining the Kodagu architecture in the form of wooden rafters, large windows and a gabled roof, Zostel adds its own quirk — minimalist decor, drawings on the wall, bunk beds, bean bags, and repurposed tables made out of old doors. Offering mixed and women-only dorms starting at INR 499 a night, and those private tents with shared bathrooms at INR 1,299, the property is for you to explore and find spots to sit back with a cup of coffee and your favourite book. Now, the only question remains, bunk or tent? Choose wisely, we say!

House Of Commons

Just like the other Zostel properties, the common rooms are where the real fun is. And this one is in the attic. Sure, you might find your next travel buddy in the dorm, but hey nothing beats talking about your travel plans while lounging on the bean bags. Oh and if you want some alone time, just grab your book or your iPod and head out to the garden where there’s a swing chair for you to curl up in. Come night time and the whole place is lit up making it perfect to be featured on your Instagram feed. Hunger pangs can be sorted at the multi-cuisine cafe, but hey, feel free to whip up a bowl of Maggi in the fully equipped kitchen.

Since you are in Coorg, be sure to check out plantation trails, explore some hiking trails, and of course, be sure to bring back some coffee. Oh, and the Dubare Elephant Camp is nearby, so you might want to check that out.
