Apart from the popular cuisine and the many temples, Udupi is known for its scenic and less touristy beaches. Clean beaches where you can soak in some of that Vitamin D, and watch the sun rise and set. Also, with Udupi just about an hour's drive from Bangalore, hitting up our list of best beaches in Udupi is something that you can do with the gang come long weekends or even that quick getaway.

Here's A List of Best Beaches in Udupi

Kaup Beach

Arguably our favourite and the best beach in Udupi, Kaup or Kapu Beach as it is locally known as, is where you can beach bum it up like a pro. For starters, you can go snorkelling and spot dolphins in the morning. Plus, don't forget to scale up the century-old lighthouse that offers some breathtaking views of sunsets and endless sea. If you are planning on staying here for the weekend, we recommend The Blue Matsya, which is right next to the beach.

Malpe Beach

It was touted to be India's first beach to offer free WiFi, so beach lovers can post that endless series of Instagram Stories while you are lazing around on the fine sand without having to worry about exhausting your data. Malpe Beach is clean, easy to reach and the best part is, it's not crowded. Be sure to go on a ferry ride and eat some authentic seafood from the many restaurants around the area.

St. Mary's Island

Just off the coast of Malpe Beach, St. Mary's Island can be reached by a short ferry ride. The white sand beaches of the island are quite scenic, especially with black rock monoliths all around it. Oh, and don't forget to wade in the clean and clear waters. You'll need to pack a ton of sunscreen unless you don't want to end up looking like roasted coffee beans.

Kodi Beach

Known as Kodi Bengre or Delta Beach, it's a short drive of about 45 minutes from Kaup Beach. It's a popular beach, and given its secluded location, there are not many tourists or people thronging the beach area, making it one of the best beaches in Udupi as well. Walk by the shore or lay out your mat and catch up on some reading. At the end of the beach, you'll see how the beach gets its Delta name. Kodi Bengare Beach is the meeting point of the river Suvarna and the Arabian Sea, a stunning view worth documenting.

Maravanthe Beach

This is arguably the best beach in Udupi when it comes to the views and vibes. The postcard-perfect view is something that you will love about Maravanthe. You have Kodachadiri Hills serving as a backdrop, golden sands for you to dig your feet in, and the calm blue river lined by trees on one side. On the other side, you have the deep blue Arabian Sea, so find a spot, and capture the scenery before your eyes. Once you’ve had your fill of the seaside, hit up the beautiful Padukone Village, one of the must-visit places here.

Hoode Beach

Located in a small fishing village, Hoode Beach is often overshadowed by Kodi Beach but it remains a popular tourist spot. While the activities here are not vast like the other beaches, you'll find people learning surfing here and just being a true blue water baby. There's a pretty random door frame in the middle of the beach, and it's become a popular photo op for people to use as a backdrop for their photos. Try and capture the setting sun between the door frame the next time you are here.

Kadike Beach

Kadike Beach is just a hop, skip, and jump away from the more popular Malpe Beach and it is often confused for the latter. Locals view the beach as an extension of Malpe, and tourists trek from Malpe to Kadike or the other way around. You'll love that it's one of those well-maintained beaches and there are plenty of benches and spots to sit if you don't want to venture too deep into the beachside.

Padubidri Beach

Padubidri Beach is somewhat of a hidden gem and it's ideal for those beach vacations where you just want to chill on the beach and read a book or listen to music. The sunset from here is just as beautiful as from the other beaches in Udupi, but here there are fewer people. Don't miss out on watching locals playing about and vendors selling snacks ranging from roasted peanuts to Mangalore-style chaats.

How To Reach & Best Time To Visit

Best Time To Visit: Udupi is best enjoyed when it's not summer, because the summer in this beach town can be humid and hellish. But come October and through March, you have got the best time to just laze around or go surfing. There's no in-between in Udupi.

How To Reach: By road, Udupi is 404 kilometres from Bangalore, taking about 8 hours. The nearest airport to Udupi is Mangalore International Airport and it's located 60 kilometres away. You can take a taxi from the airport to Udupi. There are private buses and KSRTC buses from Bangalore to Udupi as well. You can also opt for Indian Railways as there are frequent trains from KSR Bangalore to Udupi Station.
