What Makes It Awesome

A market so bustling that it's virtually open 24 hours, KR Market or City Market is a landmark of Bangalore. It's one of the city's oldest markets and is made of countless shops, street stalls and vendors, hawking everything from jasmine flowers to dumbbells, and fresh vegetables to cast iron utensils. The market is made of three floors with the basement for flowers and vegetables, the ground floor for dry goods, and the first floor for tools, kitchen utensils, and other equipment.

KR Market is perhaps best known for its flower market and it is touted to be Asia's largest (though no factual records are there and Kolkata's Mullick Ghat seems to have that title). With shopkeepers opening shop anywhere around 4 AM, you'll see the real hustle and bustle. The market, including the surrounding area, are lined with flower sellers showcasing everything from budding orchids to endless strings of fragrant jasmine. You can also pick up roses of every hue, carnations, and local bloom. Needless to say, the flower market is popular with the cities photogs and Insta lovers.

After a quick brekkie (you can hop over to one of these places) come back with your grocery bags. The fresh veggies market here sells seasonal produce and many a time you’ll be directly buying from a local farmer. Plus, the prices are a quarter of what you’ll be paying at the supermarket near home.

How To Get Here: KR Market is easily accessible by road through BMTC buses, private autos and cabs, and the nearest metro station is KR Market Metro Station.

Timings: Open virtually 24 hours but peak time is between 4 AM to 11 PM

Nearby Attractions: Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace, Bangalore Fort, Chikpete, Chikpete Sunday Bazaar

What Could Be Better

The market is riddled with improper sewage and waste management issues, and so you will have to navigate your way around filth and garbage.

LBB-Tip

You can find street hawkers behind KR Market (down the road from the Chickpet Metro Station) selling a host of stuff crafted from metal. If you are a workout junkie, you can pick up second-hand dumbbells and other equipment. This is also a great place to pick up dirt-cheap electronics like emergency lamps and lights.
