The old-money aesthetic might be popping off right now, but it's safe to say that it's nowhere new, so much so that I don't even know if I can call it a trend. The aesthetic of old money look is characterised by minimal clothing, and a polished and clean look. Some dislike the craze because they believe that it has less to do with fashion and more to do with deeper cultural issues. But we've always loved the minimal fashion due to its longevity and sustainability more than anything else. With that, if you're looking to hop on the old-money dressing style or just looking for pieces that won't sit in your closet after a few wears, here are a few picks you should definitely invest in. The curation here helps you get the basics right and jumpstart your way into this type of aesthetic in the correct way!

A shirt, especially a white one, is one of the most versatile pieces in your wardrobe. When looking for one to steer away from trendy designs like balloon sleeves and embellishments, the aim here is to find pieces that will not only work well with multiple outfits but also layer well as seasons change. Don't go for oversized and corsetted options either, choose something that fits you well, looks clean and sharp. If you wish to get another colour then we suggest going for powder blue.

Straight Fit Pants

Long, straight-fit pants in brown are another staple we've seen work in multiple old-money aesthetic 'fits'. I'd say go with brown or beige as they're easy on the eyes and go well with the subdued colour palette of quiet luxury fashion. Skip the pants with too much flare, and do not buy ones with a drawstring, no matter how comfortable they look. Remember, we're channelling a crisp look as opposed to a loungewear type of look.

Blazer

A blazer is one piece of clothing item that we saw in multiple old-money outfit inspirations. From my observation, this has been used to dress up a super casual fit to more business-casual or to bring together an outfit just by putting it on your shoulders. I'd suggest going for solid colours, such as black, white or brown, but you could also experiment here with either plaid chequered blazers or tweed blazers that give that vintage Chanel vibe.

Trench Overcoat

For the upcoming colder months, consider adding an long overcoat in black, tan or beige colours. I feel they're great on days when you want to put together a low-effort outfit but still look high-effort put together. They also tend to exude the vibe that you have your life together, very much like those with actual old-money aesthetic (read: inherited wealth) and who doesn't like that feeling? Avoid tacky coats, or worse, leather coats, and go for straight cut styles with heavy and durable materials.

Pro-Tip: We can't not mention Korean fashion, when talking about trench coats!

Gold Jewellery

Gold jewellery and dainty accessories go really well with the old-money dressing style, mainly because the muted earthy colours compliment gold, in my opinion. Again the key is to shop for pieces you'll wear time and again, so the easiest way to go about it is to get minimal gold jewellery like hoops, delicate necklaces and bracelets. Opting for tasteful jewellery doesn’t mean you need to accessorise less. You should definitely elevate your look by wearing as much as you prefer, be it a ring, bracelet, necklace, earrings or all of the above. Statement pieces are not off the table as well, especially for occasions or celebrations. I'd skip pre-attached layered necklaces though, rather go for pieces you can wear on their own or layer if you like, if necessary at all.

Belt

The way most old-money fits come together is through a belt, the most common ones are black or brown and quite honestly, we've seen more brown than black. They're extremely handy when you want to cinch your waist or just clean up your look. Usually, these feature a gold buckle with a medium-width size, this doesn't mean that you have to get a luxury designer belt, you can easily find similar styles in multiple store. Look for an option that you know won't wither away in a month and match most of your personal taste.

Dresses are where you can have a little fun, find fun silhouettes, playful colours or designs that work with you. The main thing to keep in mind here is how it fits you. Skip bodycon dresses, and fads like sequins and fringes, the common factor remains to be timeless elegance, so you can even embrace a simple dress with the right accessories. I'd suggest going for fitted dresses that give an extremely polished look and if you want to go for a loose or oversized dress, then add a belt to make it look more put together.
