Winning for

Their charming yet homely ambience, enormous portions and delicious array of condiments.

Kimchi & Co

The first to arrive was a selection of complimentary condiments. Among them, the baby potatoes dressed up in a sweet and sour sauce, cucumbers in a spice mix {had a real kick and we lapped it as fast we could}, generous helpings of kimchi and the subtle sweetness of the bean sprouts were the highlights.

Next came the Pork Bulgogi – slivers of meat tossed up in bell peppers and chilli. Like all other dishes that we ordered, the portion size of this too was huge and could happily be shared by a hungry pack of four. The meat dish was the best part of our meal and we couldn’t stop ourselves from digging our forks into the well-cooked perfectly seasoned chunks of pork. The Chicken Kimchi Fried Rice that followed was a bit too oily for our liking and the pieces of chicken too microscopic to make a difference. Though it was topped by a perfectly done sunny side up egg.

The Chicken Kalguksu was a soupy and bland broth that came in a big bowl {the size of a small-sized cooking pot}. We spotted quite a few bits of chillies in the chicken, maida noodle {they were undercooked}, and seaweed mix but they failed to create any sort of impact. We sorely missed a spicy sauce {like Gochujang, that’s made of red chilli powder, rice powder, and fermented soy beans} or, even, a bit of salt that would lift the dish up.

The DL on the ambience

Run out of a home that’s been converted to accommodate the snug restaurant, Thran’s setup is uncomplicated. But the pastel-hued lanterns that hang overhead, the wall decals of trees and flowers, knicknacks that line the shelves delight you as you wait for the food.

So we’re thinking…

Our spice accustomed palette wasn’t too flattered by the Thran experience, we’ll probably wander in some other time for the Pork Bulgogi  though.
