What Makes It Awesome

W Whether you're into trekking or are simply a nature lover, a visit to Chikmagalur with its lush greenery and blankets of snow-white coffee blossoms is well warranted. While you're here, make sure to visit the famed hills of Baba Budangiri. Located about 28 km from Chikmagalur, the mountain range is known for its hiking and trekking trails, and its thick forest cover. And with lush greenery, cool temperatures, and plenty of history and adventure, Baba Budangiri is the perfect hill station getaway.

Legend has it that coffee first made its way to India back in 1670 when a Sufi saint called Baba Budan journeyed with seven coffee seeds while on a pilgrimage to Mecca. He is believed to have sowed them in his garden near a cave in these hills, and that's how the name stuck on. In the Mullayangiri range, there are three caves with religious oracles said to be buried. If you’re religiously inclined, do visit. If not, explore the few other rock caves in the area too or check out the beautiful waterfall called Manikya Dhara just 4 kilometres from Baba Budangiri.

There's also the Mullayanagiri, Karnataka’s highest peak in the Baba Budangiri ranges. Rising 1,930 metres above sea level, the mountain offers jaw-dropping views from its crest and is home to a small shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. Perfect for a quiet holiday (the place has nothing but a well-tended garden, rest houses and a canteen), spend your time here taking pictures for the 'Gram, while walking amidst the lush garden, and admiring the flora and fauna.

Pro-Tip

Baba Budangiri is home to unique flowers called Kurinji, that bloom once every 12 years. The last time this spectacle happened was in 2018, so you'll have to wait a while for the next bloom!
