Trek To The Top Of This Fort In The Sahyadris This Weekend

Lohagad Fort Monsoon Trek

What's Happening

Lohagad Fort translated as "Iron Fort" is easily accessible from Mumbai and Pune, close to Lonavala. A climb to the top of the fort offers trekkers views of Pavna Dam, Visapur Fort which is in fact connected to Lohagad on its eastern front, and views of the Vinchu Kata or the Scorpions Tail as the hill is called due to its unique shape.

The trek is easy to moderate, and the top of the fort can be reached by a series of staircases. You'll get a chance to explore the fort - check out the four 'darwajaas', each with a different name as you climb the fort. You'll also see remnants of a court and the old 'dargah'.

At a height of 3,400 meters above sea level, the fort is relatively easy to manage and covers a distance of 5 km. You'll meet up at Lonavala station and start the climb from the base village, Lohagad Wadi. Meet at 8 AM at Lonavala Station and take a shared jeep to Lohagad.

Travel cost from Mumbai to Lonavala is not included in the price of the trek. They do include a veg breakfast and lunch, transport to and from Lohagad base village and trek experience charges in the price of the trip. They recommend you take the Indrayani Express at 5.40 AM from CSTM to reach Lonavala at the required meet up time: 8 AM.

How's The Venue

Lohagad Fort is a hill fort in the Sahyadri Ranges. Close to Lonavala, this fort has a long history and has been occupied by several different political kingdoms and dynasties over the centuries. It was a Maratha stronghold for several years and played a role in Shivaji's campaigns against his opposing factions.
