The Fashion Revolution Week: Here's What's Happening In Kolkata

What Is It?

Fashion Revolution Week and the #whomademyclothes campaign happens in April, which happens at the time of the Rana Plaza factory collapse, where 1,138 people were killed and many more injured on April 24, 2013.

The Kolkata chapter is hosting a gathering at Park Street which will have movie screenings, art installations, photo booths, clothes swapping and scrap button craftmaking and more.

Another event is taking place at Sasha (a fair trade store) on Mirza Ghalib Street at 5 PM on the same day. They have a lot lined up inclucing an impromptu fashion walk and other events. Find out more here.

Why Should I Care?

Five years ago, 1,138 people were killed on April 24 in the Rana Plaza factory collapse. These were some of the workers who toil to make the clothes we wear every day.  The large amounts of money you pay to these brands for your clothes fail to reach the people who make them in the first place, and they continue to suffer in poverty and peril.

Fashion Revolution Week and the campaign #WhoMadeMyClotheswas founded to make large brands answerable to consumers.

Who Is It For?

This event is for every single person who has ever worn a branded item of clothing to encourage them to ask brands ‘Who made my clothes?’ and demand greater transparency in the fashion supply chain. Although your contribution might seem insignificant, it will go a long, long way to help millions of people who continue to work for nearly nothing in return.

Anything Else?

To support this cause further, Fashion Revolution encourages you to post selfies on any social media platform with the hashtag #WhoMadeMyClothes and to tag your favourite brands and Fashion Revolution. Find out more about the cause here.

Call me snobbish, but I only prefer classics: like vanilla ice cream, and yellow Lays. My best friends think my autobiography should be named “But That’s Too Cliché” – apparently, I’m allergic to all things obvious. (I hope you see the irony).
