Sumie Kaneko is a Japanese koto and shamisen player and a jazz vocalist/songwriter. Her music spans across genres.
Koto is a thirteen string instrument and is the national instrument of Japan. Shamisen is a three-string instrument which was traditionally played in puppet and folk theatre. A master in the traditional repotoire of these instruments, Kaneko has extensively merged them in experimental and jazz music. Her music has a varied range of influences including Japanese folk, jazz, pop and samba.
She started playing the koto at 5 and studied Japanese music at Tokyo University of the Arts and later majored in jazz vocals from Berklee College of music. She has performed worldwide including the prestigious Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Centre.
Sumie has performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Blue Note NY, TED talk, Regattabar, Getty Center, Boston Ballet, Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Her performance ‘ Euphonies of Koto and Shamisen’ will be organised in collaboration with the Consulate of Japan in Kolkata. She will be performing on the lawn of Birla Academy on 8th November from 7 pm onward. The performance is open to all but we suggest that you come half an hour early to get a seat.
